Facebook users leaving in masses

Facebook is about to lose many members. Due to the recent privacy changes on the popular social networking Web site, many users are looking for ways to delete their account permanently. This is not so easy, as I reported just a few days ago. If you are interested, read my post about how to delete your facebook account.

Last Friday, one of the most popular searches on US version of Google was “how to delete Facebook account”. Apparently, Facebook members are not happy that some very private information is made public and shared with third parties and many are ready to leave. To make matters worse, Facebook’s privacy policy is too long and complex (almost 6000 words, as NY Times reported), which makes it highly ineffective.

I don’t quite understand how so many people got hooked to this networking site, but Facebook became so popular that it overtook Google as the most visited Web site on the Internet for a while. Now it seems, many will leave Facebook, but I don’t think this move will hurt Facebook much. If a few thousand members leave, no problem - others will come. Facebook gets more and more members every day.

Even though the press and technology Web sites have turned on Facebook, encouraging users to look for alternatives, I think Facebook’s here to stay. At least until a new Internet phenomenon takes over.

  1. I have been reading up about this recently, I wrote an article on their new privacy settings.

“At least until a new Internet phenomenon takes over.” - fantastic, and completely true.
